Look Who I Met Last Night, and The Award for the 'Most (Un)Creative Catcall Ever' Goes to...

Yes that is me with ultra-runner Dean Karnazes because I MET HIM last night!  Is that insane or what?!  My local running store was sponsoring a meet and greet happy hour with him and I had to stop by. When else will I get the chance to talk face to face with a running legend like this, I thought?  Admittedly, going into last night I didn't know too many specifics about Dean, but I knew he accomplished crazy running feats that most people would never attempt.  I think I knew him most by his extraordinary performances in the Badwater Ultras through Death Valley.  But when I googled him I found all these other crazy things he's done, like:
  • Celebrated his 30th birthday by running 30 miles overnight in his underwear, after drinking most of the night (?!)
  • Ran a marathon in each of the 50 states in 50 days in 2006 (just how?!?)
  • Ran 148 miles on a treadmill in 24 hours in 2004 (sounds like death)
In addition to being an amazing, almost superhuman athlete, he was such a NICE person.  The first thing he said to me after I introduced myself was, 'Wow, you have a great laugh!'.  He also asked me where I was from.  I mentioned Bethlehem and he told me he ran the Hat Trick at last year's Runner's World Half so I missed him there by a year!  He also signed a poster for me in which he wrote 'Keep smiling and keep running'.  How sweet is that?  The line last night was long but he was so gracious, and I'm told stayed past the allotted 2 hour time slot to ensure everyone waiting was able to meet him!  All I can say is he was a really genuine cool person and I now need to read his book.

In other news...

Have you ever been catcalled while running?  Happens to me all the time because I run along very busy roads.  Most of the time, it's a honking horn, whistling, or shout outs that I can't even (thankfully) understand.  I don't really pay attention anymore because it's just part of the territory I guess.  However, on Monday I got what I will now refer to as the Most (Un)Creative Catcall Ever.  It was cold here on Monday, probably in the low 40's when I went out for a run.  Very brisk.  Well, some dude rolls down his window and yells in the loudest, clearest voice possible: "I CAN SEE YOUR NIPPLES".  Excuse me?!?!?!  That my friends is a new one.  Thank you good sir for pointing out my body's natural physiological response to cold weather, and also for pointing out that I do in fact own a set of nipples.  Stay classy Baltimore.

So of course I was self conscious for the rest of my run!  I shouldn't really care, I know, but now I'm thinking maybe I need a thicker sports bra for the winter?!  I usually wear non-padded ones like this one from Target.  I mean let's be honest, my boobs are nowhere near full candy bar size, they are definitely more 'fun sized', which means I don't need much in the way of support.  I never considered wearing a padded sports bra, but I'm just curious - for the women out there - do you have a good one you recommend?

Thank goodness the weather today was about 20 degrees warmer.  I ran in a t shirt and shorts and never once thought about my nipples.

The sky on my run this afternoon!

Hope everyone had a great Wednesday!

Tell me...

Have you ever gotten catcalled on your run?

Do you have any good sports bra recommendations for me?!

Have you ever met a famous athlete?

In Pursuit of My 'Personal Legend' - The Alchemist, by Paulo Coehlo

Once again, I am probably one of the last people on earth to have read an important piece of literature.  This time it's The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo.  I am so thankful to have had the time and opportunity this year to reconnect with one of my true loves from childhood - reading.  I used to devour books as a child, but somewhere along the line, this passion took a back seat to pursuing academic endeavors and was pushed out of the way for things I thought I 'should' be doing instead.  But, back to the book at hand...

Well, I read this entire book in one sitting, so that should tell you something!  I also had bookmarked about 30 different pages throughout because there were so many bits of wisdom in there.

The story is narrated almost like a children's fable or fairy tale.  It's the tale of a young shepherd named Santiago who sets out on a journey for treasure, but discovers a lot more about life on the way.  (If you haven't read this book, don't worry I won't reveal any spoilers.)  The messages in this book resonated with me, especially because I have been on such a personal journey of my own this year.  One of the most important messages of the book, I think, is something the King of Salem tells Santiago in the early pages, "To realize one's destiny is a person's only real obligation".  This is what Coehlo refers to throughout the book as your 'Personal Legend'.  This is something I've come to believe more and more this year - that we are here to realize our true selves, our reason for being and to manifest the highest expression of who we are.

Once young Santiago sets out to find his treasure, he is of course met with many obstacles and setbacks along the way, and there are many times when he gets angry, discouraged and wants to give up and turn back.  Coehlo states that indeed, many people in life sadly do not realize their Personal Legends, and he believes this is because they are met with four main obstacles:

1.  We are told from an early age that our dreams are impossible, so we give up on them early, thinking they are impractical, and bury them over the years.

2.  If we decide that our dreams are possible, we may never pursue them for fear of abandoning everything and everyone we know and love to pursue them.

3.  If we make it past 1 and 2, we may give up along the way when we meet with defeat.

4.  And if we make it all the way to the point where our dream is within our grasp, many will feel guilt, disbelief or fear that all the years of sacrifice and hard work led them this far, that they just may turn back precisely before realizing their dream.

Santiago meets with people along the way who have given up the pursuit of their Personal Legends because they were afraid of change, afraid of leaving the security they knew.  But he also meets others who are in pursuit of their Personal Legends, and an Alchemist who has realized his.  All the lessons he learns along the way propel him to fulfilling his destiny.

Santiago also learns to watch for 'omens' along the way.  What I really think Coehlo is referring to when he says 'omen's' are your own intuition and messages from a higher power.  If we are still and quiet and tuned into our own hearts, we can often decipher what direction to take in life.  The problem is this little voice inside us is so easily drowned out by forces in the external world.  We end up listening to those outside voices instead of our own - and that is how we get off track.  I know that's how I did.

I won't reveal any more of the story for you, but I will leave you with a few of the more poignant quotes from the book that I hope will spark some inner dialogue in you as they did in me:

"...whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it's because that desire originated in the soul of the universe.  It's your mission on earth."

"...people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises."

"When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision."

"...wherever your heart is, that is where you'll find your treasure."

"...no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of it's dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity."

"...before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way.  It does this...so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream.  That's the point at which most people give up."

I'm not giving up!  How about you?

Your turn.

Have you read The Alchemist? What did you think of it?

Read any good books lately?

What do you think will be your 'Personal Legend'?

Fall Workouts and Fitness Goals

Ok, ok so I guess I like Fall a little bit.  There was no denying the beauty around me on my morning walk yesterday.  Those are actual pictures from the streets of Baltimore - kind of unreal right?

Now that my big race is over, I'm in what I would consider my 'off-season'.  Although I work out consistently year-round, I'm not officially in training for anything right now.  This season for me usually happens in the months of Nov/Dec/Jan.  So I wanted to talk about what my workout plans are for the next 2 months or so, until after the Holidays.

Last week I took it pretty easy after the RWHalf.  I did two long walks on Tuesday/Thursday of 4.5 miles each and then an hour swim on Friday.

This week I was back at it, but scaled back on the running.  My workouts this week looked like this:

Sunday - 5K Run
Monday - 25 min HIIT workout - This one, from my Pinterest board @Jillyruns
Tuesday - 1 hour BodyPump (weightlifting)
Wednesday - 1 hour swimming + 10 min in sauna
Thursday - 4 mile walk (morning) + 5K run (evening)
Friday - Rest Day!

Over the summer, I tried to concentrate on cross-training a lot more than I normally do, and this is one of the things that I believe led to my PR in the RWHalf.  So for the next couple of months, I want to focus on cross-training and strength-training so I continue to get stronger, build muscle and (hopefully) prevent my recurring leg issues (tibial tendinitis and periostitis) from rearing their ugly heads again.

Last year around this time, I used a Groupon for a month of unlimited CrossFit and I really felt myself get stronger in that month.  I actually became addicted to the intensity and challenge of CrossFit in that time and it's something I wish I could afford to do on a regular basis.  I think it was actually a really nice complement to running.  However, membership fees at CrossFit 'boxes' are just out of my league right now, so in the alternative, I scour Pinterest and the web for WOD's you can do at home.

This year during my off-season, I'm going to be using a Groupon I bought for a boot camp style workout studio.  It seems like the workouts are somewhat CrossFit-esque and the owner keeps you guessing by changing up the game plan every class.  I've seen videos on their Facebook page of clients doing everything from running laps around the parking lot carrying medicine balls to doing handstand wall walk drills, so needless to say, I'm excited to get started!  I am definitely a high-intensity workout gal so this sounds like it's going to be right up my alley :)  Once I get into it, I'll post some reviews and updates of the classes on here.

In addition to cross-training, one of my goals this year was to try to get into yoga.  Well, it's now November and I've made 0 progress on that one :(  I feel like I need some kind of workout that's a bit less intense, and have been reading a lot about the meditative and spiritual benefits of starting a yoga practice.  Those elements are something I want more of in my life right now.  In addition, I've also been wanting to increase my flexibility.  I was a gymnast as a little kid and used to be really flexible, and sadly I've lost a lot of that over the years.  In any case, it looks like this may become a 2014 goal.

After the Holidays, I'm going to be looking for a spring race.  I've considered entering the raffle for the Nike Women's Half in DC again (which opens Nov 5th, btw) because I had a really great time at the inaugural race this past April, however I've run the course already.  I kind of like my big races each year to be in new venues.  So, I'm open to feedback for a Spring half - please send me some recommendations!  I think I may want to travel for the race too, and use it as an excuse for a long weekend to see someplace new :)

I'll still be running over the next couple of months, but with no set mileage in place.  I'm going to run for the pure unadulterated JOY of it.  Isn't that a novel idea?!

And I'm also planning a few shorter distance races and 'fun runs' in the meantime.  I've already signed up for a local 5K next weekend in my neighborhood.  The course actually runs along roads that I use for my long training runs so I dk how I'm going to get it in my head that I'm racing and therefore need to speed it up a bit!  I always think 5K's are the hardest distance because they're so fast - you are literally just sprinting for 3 miles :/  Ugh!  I'm also thinking about doing a Turkey Trot back home in Bethlehem over Thanksgiving.  And maybe something over the Christmas holiday.  We'll see.  The goal over the next two months is to give my legs a rest, cross-train like a maniac, grow some muscles and come back in January/Feb ready to train for my next race, wherever that may take me...

Oh, one last thing.  Lately, a little seed has been planted in my head and has started to grow; I'm thinking I *might* want to do a full marathon.  Eeeek!  I can't believe I just put that out there.  Maybe once I get 5 Halfs under my belt, I'll feel more confident?  Anyway, this is a next year, or the next year goal, not a Fall goal, so I'll just leave it at that :)

How about you?

What do your workouts look like lately?

Are you currently training for anything?

Any recommendations for a nice Spring half marathon?

Timing, Luck, Intuition...or Something Else?

I want to share a little story with you about something that happened over the weekend.  In fact, many of these types of things have been happening for me lately and they have got me thinking that everything is going to be alright.  Let me explain...

My iPhone had been acting up the past couple of months.  Barely holding a charge, or sometimes just going dead on me in the middle of phone conversations.  Needless to say, I didn't feel safe knowing I might not have a phone when I needed one, especially because I am often out and about, and home, alone.  However, I had been putting off getting it serviced because that's often what I do with errands or tasks I'm not excited about.  I also thought I had purchased my phone last September which would mean it was out of warranty and I didn't really have the money for a repair right now.

However, this past weekend I finally decided to just make an appointment for service at the Apple store.  The day of my appointment I was considering rescheduling because I didn't feel like driving all the way over there and I'd had a busy afternoon, but something told me I should keep the appointment.

After I checked in, one of the Apple guys came over and hooked my phone up to perform his diagnostics.  He said my battery definitely needed to be replaced and told me the price for a new battery is $79.  (Say what?!)  He asked for my Apple account information and said he could check to see if I was still under warranty.  I told him I was pretty sure it's been over a year since I had the phone.  But then he looked up and said something along the lines of, 'I've never seen this before, but this is the LAST day of your warranty.  You purchased the phone 1 year ago today.  This is your lucky day.  If I were you, I'd go buy a lottery ticket tonight.'  HAHA Amazing!  I just sat there stunned and THANKFUL.  Timing from the heavens.  I'm sure of it.

And the thing is, I've been having many more of these types of experiences this year.  Things have been happening and coming together at just the right time.  I've been fortunate to have even won some pretty wonderful things lately.  Most recently, a one-month subscription to FlexJobs which I'm pretty excited about!  And all of this has got me thinking about some things I've read in my Daily Love emails. (Seriously, if you have not signed up for their daily emails, I urge you to.  They are always uplifting and thought provoking.  I love starting my day with them.)  Two of the tenets of Mastin Kipp's philosophy are that "The Universe will support you in manifesting your Purpose" and that "Things always work out for the best".  I am starting to see both of these are very true this year.

As I move away from toxic situations, and circumstances that are not in my best interest or part of my Purpose, things start to fall into place.  I've also started to pay more attention to my intuition, and actually listen to and heed the hints it gives me.  For so long, I didn't let that voice be heard and instead focused on feedback I received from the outside world.  Not good.  Only you know what's best for you.

Another thing I've learned this year is that the Universe will repeat lessons until you have learned them.  Believe me, there were times in my past where I knew what I was doing was definitely not in my best interest, and not representative of me or my values, spirit or Purpose, but I kept doing them anyway (ie. my previous career).  Finally, the Universe said "Enough!".  After losing my job in February, I have started down a path that is more aligned to my true self, and because of that, the Universe is providing for me in so many ways.  I have lots more to share with you about future plans, but I wanted to relate the story from this weekend to illustrate how I am being cared for because I believe I am finally manifesting who I am.  Detours are a part of life, that's for sure, and sometimes this loud crazy life drowns out the small voice inside you, that you should have been listening to all along.  But once you do, I believe the Universe will rise up to meet you.

Kind of deep today.  Please feel free to share any recent experiences you've had with luck, timing, intuition or divine intervention.

Friday Faves - FOOD Edition!

It's been awhile since I've done a Friday Favorites post and since I'm in recovery/eating mode this week I thought I'd post about some great food items I'm enjoying lately.  Let's dig in (I hope you're not hungry!)...

1.  For breakfast, I discovered this incredible Nature's Path Coconut Chia Granola cereal.  In one of my previous Friday Faves posts, I revealed how much I love coconut flavored anything.  This is still the case.  I happened upon this new cereal by chance, while strolling down the 'natural foods' section of my grocery store.  I like that it's organic, non-GMO and vegan.  It also contains very little sugar (only 9g per serving) and 45% of your RDV of Omega-3's.  But despite how healthy it is, it is SO good.  There are huge chunks of dried coconut in it.  Mmmm.

2.  Snack time!  I came across these Raw Revolution bars a few weeks ago while stocking up on my Kind Bars.  These are also vegan, organic and non-GMO.  In addition, they contain 7g of protein and are also pretty low in sugar.  The Spirulina Dream flavor does taste a little 'green' from the spirulina algae but I like the taste.  And the Chocolate Coconut Bliss is a definite win.  I always keep bars like this in my purse for snacking on the go and I'm so glad I have a few new options now.

3.  Juice!  This one is not a new discovery, but it's been awhile since I've purchased it.  I discovered Sambazon Acai Juice a few years ago at Whole Foods.  When I worked downtown I would often walk to Whole Foods to pick up a salad and some of this yummy juice for lunch.  It's a bit pricey which is why I haven't purchased any lately, but my local grocery store had a sale on the large bottles this week so I splurged.  I've tried other brands of Acai juice but Sambazon original is still my favorite.  Do you drink Acai?  It's a touted superfood, but I just really love the flavor of Acai.  I even found an Acai sorbet at Wegmans this past summer.  I'll write that one up on a Friday Faves soon!

4.  Dinner time!  I don't think I've really mentioned in past posts how much I love seafood.  And I think I even left out that one of my favorite foods is crab.  I could eat snow crab legs for days, and in fact I did, when I was in Myrtle Beach last month.  However, this particular snippet is devoted to Mussels!  When I was in Belgium a few years ago, I sampled a very traditional Belgian dish called Moules-frites, which means 'mussels & fries'.  I'd had mussels before that trip, but only as part of Italian pasta dishes.  Well, after eating moules-frites, I unleashed a new found appreciation for savoring mussels all by themselves.
So, a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon these vacuum packed frozen mussels at my local grocery store and I have been eating them nonstop.  There are a couple things I love about them.  First, the bag contains just mussels, no sauce, no butter - so it fits with my non-dairy lifestyle.  Secondly, you can actually steam them in the bag, in the microwave!  For someone whose domestic skills are seriously lacking, this is heaven.  This bag says it contains 3 servings but that's hogwash.  For dinner, I steam and eat the entire bag myself.  Each serving contains 33% of your daily iron requirement, so I'm getting 99% of my iron in one meal!  Plus, there are 18g of protein in each serving, which means that's 54g all for me.  Watch out for my new Popeye muscles.

5.  Treat time!  Since Halloween is upon us, I thought I'd throw some candy in here.  Candy is still 'food' right?!  I know I've mentioned a few times one of the foods I really miss from my childhood when I could eat dairy was Snickers bars!  Seems trivial I know, but oh how I loved them. Anyway, a few years ago, I discovered that these Goldberg's Peanut Chews were VEGAN!  Who knew?  And they taste somewhat similar to Snickers.  These are made with dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, and instead of caramel as the filler, they contain molasses.  So they're not exactly the same, but they are really good!  I wouldn't consider these healthy, although nuts and dark chocolate are supposed to be good for you right?!

6.  Another dessert!  I had to throw this one in there.  One of my favorite places to eat when I make trips back home to Bethlehem is Vegan Treats.  It is an amazing vegan bakery with it's storefront in Bethlehem, but it also has a large catering business and supplies baked goods to restaurants up and down the East Coast from NYC to DC.  Well, this weekend after the RWHalf, I stopped in to treat myself to some tasty vegan soft serve and I was rewarded with one of the most sublime, heavenly, tastiest things I think I've ever eaten in my life - Cheesecake flavored vegan ice cream.  I actually have no recollection of what cheesecake even tastes like anymore, and I'm not even sure I liked it as a child, but I could probably eat this ice cream every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of it.  I wish I could describe the flavor accurately to you dairy-eaters.  It wasn't overly sweet, but it just tasted rich and kind of buttery?  I don't even know what butter tastes like but that's how I would describe it.  I can only hope the next time I go back home they are serving up this flavor because I will surely walk out of there with at least a cone in each hand! Hahaha.  If you are ever in the area, I would urge you to check out this bakery.  According to their reviews on Yelp, people travel for hours sometimes just to stop in!

Well now that both you and I are sufficiently starving, I'll wrap it up.  I hope you also had a week filled with wonderful tasty treats!

Your turn!

What foods are you loving lately?

Any favorite Halloween treats?

**Disclaimer:  I was not compensated or provided products for this post.  These are simply foods I purchase on my own, eat and enjoy!

Check out Runaway Bridal Planner!

Just a quick one today...

Kristy, a fellow SPA sister and blogger over at Runaway Bridal Planner, decided to feature me on her blog today!  How sweet of her.  She asked me some pretty good questions, so if you'd like to see my answers and get to know me (and her!) a little better, I invite you to stop by her blog today at this link:

Runner's Spotlight - Let me Introduce Jill

In other news, I've been taking it easy this week after the RW Half and in fact, I haven't even run since Sunday! Feels a bit weird, but also nice to relax.  I did do two 4.5 mile walks this week (pushing a stroller, so that counts as arms too, right?!) and plan to go for a nice long swim tomorrow.  And I think this weekend I'll go out for my first (untimed) run!

Hope you're all having a great week so far.  And because it's a wild and crazy Thursday night over here with my cats....Enjoy...
